I spent the entire train journey from Ella to Kandy doing as the locals do and sitting in the doorway of the 3rd class car. There is no better seat on the train to watch the perse Ceylon countryside pass by, not even in first class, which I’ve heard has locked windows and doors! From my seat on the floor in the doorway, I was able to take in the constantly changing scenery and peer back at the powder blue train as it twisted and turned. During the ride, the landscape changed rapidly from tea plantations, lush forest, tropical greenery, and sprawling mountains. I hope you enjoy these vistas from the scenic Ella to Kandy train ride as much as I did. If you ever get the chance to visit Sri Lanka taking this train ride is an absolute must, and it is an entirely budget friendly way to move through Sri Lanka’s hill country, the 6-hour journey cost 400 Sri Lankan rupees, about $2.50 USD. Headed to Ella? Read about my experience exploring Ella and climbing Little Adam’s Peak.

22 Jul 2017Wonderful pictures of my favourite country in the world, can't wait to go back one day. We didn't do the train we drove and it was a very hair raising drive! Thanks for sharing 🙂

23 Jul 2017It is the best way to get through the tea country! Otherwise you have to take buses or taxis to get around but it is all very affordable and scenic.
