M last stop in Peninsular Malaysia was in the coastal town of Desaru which is a quick 30-minute ferry ride from Singapore, our next stop! Sand & Sandals is the perfect escape for a girls trip to unwind and play in the surf and sun.  The luxury resort feels ultra exclusive and is a one-stop shop for everything you need for a relaxing weekend getaway. Oh, they also won a World Luxury Hotel Award in 2017. Here are 5 reasons why I fell in love with Sand & Sandals, and think you will too!

We were invited to stay in the couples deluxe room with private garden. The massive guestroom had a luxurious king-size canopy poster bed as well as a colorful lounge area. The highlight, however, is the outdoor stone tub with privacy shutters and an old-school porch swing. The fence opened up directly into the pool yard, but however, we couldn’t lock the door from the outside so we ended up exiting through the front door anyway. The ensuite bathroom was massive with a rain shower and fantastic toilteries–including hair conditioner! We were welcomed with fresh local fruit that we enjoyed on the love swing as dusk settled in around the resort.

At Sand & Sandals there are enough dining choices that you could eat a different sort of cuisine for three meals a day without making any repeats all weekend long. There’s a café with cakes and coffee, Shiokaze Teppan–a Japanese hibachi grill, Beach Hut Bistro–which serves western dishes, Snuk Thai Street BBQ, and Spices & Herbs, where an extensive buffet-style breakfast with western and eastern selections are served each morning. Oh, and there’s also 24-hour room service. Our favorite dining experience was Fortune Kitchen, from the traditional Chinese decor to the thoughtful presentation of the delicious food our senses were buzzing throughout our entire meal. The chef trained at a culinary school run by one of the top Dim Sum masters in Hong Kong! I was treated to an incredible Dim Sum lunch where we tried a handful of dishes including one of my all-time favorite foods, shrimp dumplings! I loved the presentation of the soup which is presented in a glass teapot, and I couldn’t get enough of the crispy avocado roll. The charcoal ball with salted egg yolk and gold leaf was strangely delicious, and something I hadn’t tried before.

An absolute must for couples visit Sand & Sandals is a mesmerizing experience at the zen in-house Senses Spa. We were treated to a blissful massage in an outdoor pavilion that allowed us to relax with the sounds of nature floating in and crisp sea salt in the air. The setting is ultra-romantic with an outdoor bamboo shower, and a heart-shaped bathtub that’s just the right size for two. We loved our matching robes and enjoyed our treatment thoroughly, from the foot cleansing to the massage, to the fresh tea served after, the entire spa treatment was deliciously luxurious. We were even gifted with some of the homemade spa products, a wonderful massage oil, rose-shaped soap, and bright pink bath salts.

Sand & Sandals has a beautiful private beach that stretches as far as the eye can see. The waters can get a bit rough so pay attention to the warning flags. The ultra-soft sand is perfect for long strolls on the beach. If you prefer to just relax with a great book you have several hammocks or swings that on the beach to chose from! Although the resort was busy during our stay due to a conference we were literally the only people on the beach each time we went down to the shore. When the waves are less choppy there are jet skis and canoes that can be rented right on the beach and taken out into the sparkling South China Sea.

If you’re more of a pool than beach person you will be in heaven at Sand & Sandals massive pool–seriously, it’s huge. There’s a wading pool, a section for laps, a circular bit for floating, and a slide that is perfect for Boomerang videos! Over the pool is a floating gym, after all, what could be better motivation than envisioning yourself in your swimwear? There’s a separate jacuzzi pool that links up with a swim-up sunken bar. The lounge charges are comfortable and the pool towels are ultra plush.
