Finding time to work out while traveling isn’t easy but there are effective ways to stay in shape while on the road. Here are five simple ways to stay fit as a digital nomad that will keep you feeling and looking healthy.
BRING THE GYM WITH YOU
Don’t worry about leaving the gym behind when traveling–you can bring it with you. Consider purchasing equipment that you can fit in your luggage, whether it be a jump rope, yoga mat, or even mini dumbbells. This way, you can implement a workout in the comfort of your accommodation without needing to find a local gym.
Skipping rope is a great tool for an effective cardio workout. Just 10 minutes of skipping is said to be as effective as 30 minutes of running, so consider a quick burst in the morning to get you going for the day.
WATCH WHAT YOU EAT AND DRINK
Your diet will play a major role in whether or not you stay in shape as you travel and work remotely. Depending on your destination it’s highly likely that traditional and popular foods are also super calorific.
By all means, indulge in an Italian pizza every once in awhile, but know that you may be consuming up to 1,000 calories! Having the mentality that it’s necessary to completely cut out the treats will just leave you miserable. It makes sense to eat all the gelato, pizza, panini’s and pasta when quite literally in Rome, but make sure it doesn’t become the norm. You need to stay extra healthy as traveling and working simultaneously means you’ll be exerting yourself much more than usual, so try and maintain a balanced diet as much as possible.
TAKE UP SOME FUN ACTIVITIES
Embrace nature and fold in some fun fitness activities during your travels. Everything from hiking to white water rafting will burn calories while providing an unforgettable experience. You’ll be exerting muscles that perhaps go underworked otherwise. I recently rounded up 10 of the top fitness travel bucket list destinations such as bike rides, snorkeling, and more. You’ll be rewarded with a thorough workout with some incredible scenery.
If you do plan to be active during your stint as a digital nomad make sure you’ve packed some comfortable and durable sneakers. You could be traversing some challenging terrain, so ensure you’re prepared and find a pair that is lightweight enough not to be a burden in your bag.
JUST KEEP SWIMMING
Let’s be honest–you’re probably going to be swimming a lot as you travel. Whether you’ve chosen to be a DN in a seaside locale with turquoise waters or found an awesome Airbnb with a pool try to get in a few laps for a quick and effective workout.
Swimming is one of the best things for your body as it works nearly all of your muscles. Acting as both strength and resistance training, it’s also psychologically beneficial–you’ll be reducing your stress levels as well as increasing blood flow to the brain.
START A BLOG OUTLINING YOUR PLANS
You’re a digital kind of traveler, so why not start up a travel and fitness blog? You’ll have an avid and keen audience that will hold you accountable and inspire you to keep up with your fitness goals. Take the above tips into account and formulate your own routines and advice for others to follow.
